October 9.2015 – Story Behind “Free” by The Zac Brown Band

“Free” is the fifth single from country music group Zac Brown Band’s first major studio album, The Foundation.

Zac and his band decided to climb Mt Warning during a trip to Byron bay NSW Australia in 2006. Mt Warning stands 3,793 ft above sea level and is the first place that the sun touches in the morning as it rises over the Australian Mainland. As Zac sat there in the beautiful peace and quiet, he and his band were the only people on earth to be there at that point experiencing this magnificent display of nature and it is then that they wrote this song.

The song’s music video features footage filmed during a nine-day United Service Organization/Armed Forces Entertainment sponsored tour across Kuwait and Iraq.

When this reached #1 on Billboard’s Country Songs chart, The Foundation became the first major-label debut album to yield four country chart-toppers since Brooks & Dunn’s Brand New Man in 1991-92. The other three tracks from the disc that reached peak position were “Chicken Fried,” “Toes,” and “Highway 20 Ride.”

Lyrics:
So we live out in our old van
Travel all across this land
Me and you

We’ll end up hand in hand
Somewhere down on the sand
Me and you

Just as free
Free as we’ll ever be
Just as free
Free as we’ll ever be

Drive until the city lights
Dissolve into a country sky
Me and you

Lay underneath the Harvest moon
Do all the things that lovers do
Just me and you

Just as free
Free as we’ll ever be
Just as free
Free as we’ll ever be
Ever be

No we don’t have a lot of money
No we don’t have a lot of money
No we don’t have a lot of money
No we don’t have a lot of money
No we don’t have a lot of money
No we don’t have a lot of money
All we need is love

We’re free as we’ll ever be
Just as free
Free as we’ll ever be
Ever be

So we live out in our old van
Travel all across this land
