May 15.2014 – The Story Behind “Famous In A Small Town” by Miranda Lambert

“Famous In A Small Town” is a song about how “everyone dies famous in a small town”.

It was awarded the Fan’s Choice for Single Record of the Year at the 2008 ACM Awards.

Miranda Lambert and Travis Howard wrote this song. On the 2003 series of the reality TV show Nashville Star, which was won by Buddy Jewell, Lambert came in 3rd and Howard 9th.

Miranda Lambert said in her publicity materials: “We wrote that in my house, and it’s exactly what it says. I’ve been on the front page of my hometown paper seven times. I wasn’t trying to write a ‘small town’ song, I had gone around visiting people that day and it got me remembering situations. It all came back to me and came out in the song. They’re true stories – if you’re late for church, people are going to talk about it and be all in your business.”

This song took on a new meaning after numerous rumors which suggested Lambert was pregnant or heading for divorce from her husband Blake Shelton. Onstage at the CMA Songwriters Series on July 11, 2013, the songstress was up front about the very untrue reports. “I’ve been pregnant, having twins, we’ve been separated, I’m drunk and alone, pregnant again, then we’re having twins again, and now we’re getting divorced,” she said. “I can’t even name the stuff. It’s funny because I realize this song means even more to me now because I’m in the tabloids every week for being famous for something I didn’t even do, than for something I want to be famous for, which is playing my damn guitar and writing a song.”

“Famous In A Small Town” was Lambert’s second Top 20 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 2008.

The song was ranked number 40 on The 9513’s 50 Best Country Songs of 2007.

LYRICS: Written by Miranda Lambert and Travis Howard
They say life is so much sweeter
Through the telephoto lens of fame
Around here you get just as much attention
Cheerin’ at the high school football game

I dreamed of going to Nashville
Put my money down and placed my bet
But I just got the first buck of the season
I made the front page of the Turner “Town Gazette”

Every last one, route one, rural heart’s got a story to tell
Every grandma, in law, ex girlfriend
Maybe knows you just a little too well
Whether you’re late for church or you’re stuck in jail
Hey words gonna get around
Everybody dies famous in a small town

Tyler and Casey broke up
It ended pretty quietly
We heard he was caught red-handed with her mama
That’s just what they let us all believe

Every last one, route one, rural heart’s got a story to tell
Every grandma, in law, ex girlfriend
Maybe knows you just a little too well
Whether you’re late for church or you’re stuck in jail
Hey words gonna get around
Everybody dies famous in a small town

Baby who
Needs their faces in a magazine
Me and you
We’ve been stars of the town since we were 17

Let’s go on down to the quick stop
Wear your yellow shades
And I’ll put on my tight jeans
And we’ll just spend the weekend burnin’ rubber
And we’ll let em point and stare in disbelief

Every last one, route one, rural heart’s got a story to tell
Every grandma, in law, ex girlfriend
Maybe knows you just a little too well
Whether you’re late for church or you’re stuck in jail
Hey words gonna get around
Everybody dies famous in a small town
