“I’m Alive” is a duet with the South African-American singer-songwriter Dave Matthews and Kenny Chesney.
Chesney included this on his 2009 Greatest Hits II collection. It was one of two non-singles included on the album.
Kenny told AOL that this was the most personal track on Greatest Hits II, “just because of where I was in my life when I wrote it.” He explained that he wrote this song after his break-up with the actress Renee Zellweger, saying: “I woke up one day and realized, even though I’m going through all this stuff and don’t feel good about it, the outer shell of my life is really great. I’m alive; I get to make music; I’ve got a lot of great friends. That’s the message of the song.”
It was originally recorded by Willie Nelson on his 2008 album, Moment of Forever, which Chesney co-produced.
This is the Dave Matthews Band front man’s first solo appearance on the Hot 100.
LYRICS: Written by Kenny Chesney, Dean Dillion and Mark Tamburino
Everybody’s got their share of battle scars
As for me, I’d like to thank my lucky stars that I’m alive and well…
It’d be easy to add up all the pain
And all the dreams you sat and watched go up in flames
Dwell on the wreckage as it smolders in the rain
But not me…I’m alive
And today you know that’s good enough for me
Breathin’ in and out’s a blessing can’t you see
Today’s the first day of the rest of my life and I’m alive
And well…I’m alive and well
The stars are dancin’ on the water here tonight
It’s gonna fall a soul when there’s not a soul in sight
This boat has caught its wind and brought me back to life now I’m alive and well
