Here’s the Story Bedhind the hit Sugarland song “Stay”.

“Stay” was the most-watched video on CMT.com in 2007. In an interview with CMT (Country Music Television),Jennifer Nettles explained that she wrote the song in 2003, and it was inspired by Reba McEntire’s “Whoever’s in New England,” which is from the perspective of a wife whose husband is cheating on her. Nettles wanted to write from the perspective of the two people doing the cheating. Said Nettles: “Even though the person who is cheating might think he or she is getting away with something, they know they aren’t living their highest truth, and they wouldn’t be in the situation if they were just happy-go-lucky in the first place. Nobody is happy in this situation.”

This was a very emotional song for Nettles, and it came together quickly. She told CMT: “It was just in a couple of sittings on my couch,” she explains. “And once the first line came, ‘I’ve been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall. I’ve been laying here, praying she won’t call,’ the story just unfolded.”

“Stay” has racked up numerous awards for Sugarland and Jennifer Nettles, as a writer. Most notable has been at the 51st Grammy Awards where it won “Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” and “Best Country Song”. At the 2008 ACM Awards it won two awards for “Song of the Year” and “Single of the Year”. At the 2008 CMA Awards it won “Song of the Year” and at the 2008 CMT Music Awards it won “Duo Video of the Year”.

Kristian Bush tells us that Nettles didn’t have much confidence in this song. “She squirreled it away, like she didn’t think it was very good,” he said. Once he convinced her to let him hear the song, she played it for Bush and he loved it. The song became the first Sugarland track that was written by just one member. “It was kind of fun,” Kristian said. “She’s a great writer, and people didn’t really know that, they just associated her with singing, because they didn’t really know her previous career. It was fun to help her redefine that for herself.”

The duo tried recording what Kristian Bush calls a “Black Crowes version” of this song, and then a version with an orchestra and a huge chorus before deciding that the song worked best with just the two of them performing on the track in a simple arrangement.

It was released in September 2007 as the fourth and final single from their album Enjoy the Ride . “Stay” was certified Gold by the RIAA on February 21, 2008. It was later Sugarland’s first single to earn a Platinum certification on March 24, 2009. It has sold 1,960,000 copies as of April 2013.

LYRICS: Written by Jennifer Nettles
I’ve been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall
And I’ve been laying here praying, praying she won’t call
It’s just another call from home
And you’ll get it and be gone
And I’ll be crying

And I’ll be begging you, baby
Beg you not to leave
But I’ll be left here waiting
With my Heart on my sleeve
Oh, for the next time we’ll be here
Seems like a million years
And I think I’m dying

What do I have to do to make you see
She can’t love you like me?

Why don’t you stay
I’m down on my knees
I’m so tired of being lonely
Don’t I give you what you need
When she calls you to go
There is one thing you should know
We don’t have to live this way
Baby, why don’t you stay

You keep telling me, baby
There will come a time
When you will leave her arms
And forever be in mine
But I don’t think that’s the truth
And I don’t like being used and I’m tired of waiting
It’s too much pain to have to bear
To love a man you have to share

Why don’t you stay
I’m down on my knees
I’m so tired of being lonely
Don’t I give you what you need
When she calls you to go
There is one thing you should know
We don’t have to live this way
Baby, why don’t you stay

I can’t take it any longer
But my will is getting stronger
And I think I know just what I have to do
I can’t waste another minute
After all that I’ve put in it
I’ve given you my best
Why does she get the best of you
So next time you find you wanna leave her bed for mine

Why don’t you stay
I’m up off my knees
I’m so tired of being lonely
You can’t give me what I need
When she begs you not to go
There is one thing you should know
I don’t have to live this way
Baby, why don’t you stay, yeah

I love sugarland and as I like the tune of the song I HATE the song. I am a wife who’s husband was having a long affair and ended up having a baby with the other woman. I still battle with her, as she still wants him and him always putting her first. I just feel like who gives a flip what the other woman wants, he’s married and she knows that so she needs to move on. I think it’s a slap in the face for us woman that go through it.
