Hear the story behind the song here!

Good Morning Beautiful” is a song written by Zack Lyle and Todd Cerney, and recorded by Steve Holy.

It was released in July 2001 as the fourth single from the album Blue Moon. The song slowly became a major hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart on February 2, 2002. The song’s five-week reign atop the chart was part of a 41-week chart run.

Featured in the movie Angel Eyes, “Good Morning Beautiful” was initially released as a cut from the movie’s soundtrack. Following the song’s chart success, “Good Morning Beautiful” was added to later presses of Holy’s debut album Blue Moon.

Songrwriter Zach Lyle tells this story about writing the song; while driving on a Nashville interstate, he was wracking his brain for a song idea. He says he looked skyward for inspiration — and literally saw the writing on the wall!

“I was getting off at my exit,” Zach begins, “and I saw the words ‘Good Morning Beautiful’ spray painted on the rock wall overhead. That struck me as an interesting phrase.”

It also struck him at the right time. Zach, a budding songwriter, was about to write with Music Row veteran Todd Cerney for the first time.

“I didn’t have any ideas for songs,” Zach recalls, “which was really awful, because I was the one who had set up the meeting. We kicked around some ideas and I mentioned ‘Good Morning Beautiful’ as a title.”

Todd — a songwriter for more than 20 years — pounced on the phrase immediately. “I had never heard those exact words in a song before,” says Todd. “I told Zach that it’s so obvious, we just have to write it.”

Zach remembers, “I got my guitar out and started fooling around with that title, and came up with a melody that would fit. After that, the song just came together — before we had time to mess it up.”

“I actually watched Zach write a lot of it,” laughs Todd. “I just made sure we were going in the right direction. The main thing I felt was that we had to keep it simple — the song just called for it.”

But the tune’s simplicity nearly worked against it. “It’s so subtle that it’s deceptive,” explains Todd. “A lot of major stars turned it down, probably because the song just seemed too simple.”

Steve Holy, an unknown at the time, cut “Good Morning Beautiful” in 1998. But it sat in limbo before finally being released at the end of last year.

“It was tough to wait so long,” says Zach with a sigh. “But somehow I knew it would happen — there was something special about that song.”

Fans felt the same way — “Good Morning Beautiful” stayed at No. 1 for five weeks the weeks of February 2nd through March 4th 2002/

“People tell us that it’s become ‘their song,’ or they played it at their wedding,” says Todd. “That’s the most rewarding thing.” (source: Bob Paxman)

LYRICS: Written By Todd Cerney and Zach Lyle

Good morning beautiful, how was your night

Mine was wonderful with you by my side

And when I open my eyes

And see your sweet face

It’s a good morning beautiful day

I couldn’t see the light

I didn’t know day from night

I had no reason to care

But since you came along

I can face the dawn

‘Cause I know you’ll be there

Good morning beautiful, how was your night

Mine was wonderful with you by my side

And when I open my eyes

And see your sweet face

It’s a good morning beautiful day

I never worry if it’s raining outside

‘Cause in here with you girl

The sun always shines

Good morning beautiful, how was your night

Mine was wonderful with you by my side

And when I open my eyes

And see your sweet face

It’s a good morning beautiful day

It’s a beautiful day

Good morning

What a beautiful day
