Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote 2 versions of “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” and both are on Have a Nice Day. One version is just the band and was a hit on the Adult Contemporary charts. The other is a Country version featuring Jennifer Nettles of the band Sugarland. At the time, Sugarland wasn’t well known, but when this song became a hit, so did their album Twice The Speed Of Life, which was packaged with the single and video of this song and sold at Target stores.

“Who Says You Can’t Go Home” is about remaining true to your roots no matter where life takes you. For Bon Jovi, their home is New Jersey, where they are a great source of pride. Despite their travels, that is always their home and they will always be welcomed back.

At first, Jon Bon Jovi wanted Keith Urban to sing with him on the country version and play the banjo. It didn’t work out since their voices were so similar and the banjo didn’t sound right, so they used Nettles. The song went to #1 on the Country charts, the first time a Rock band has done that.

Bon Jovi has some experience with Country music. Jon Bon Jovi has made trips to Nashville to work with the songwriters there, and the band hit the Country singles chart in 1998 with “Bang The Drum,” a duet with Chris LeDoux. Bon Jovi’s song “Wanted Dead Or Alive” was covered by Country singer Chris Cagle on his 2005 album Anywhere But Here.

This won a Country Music Television (CMT) award for Best Collaborative Video.

Jennifer Nettles admitted in an interview with The Colorado Springs Gazette that she was anxious about hooking up with the rocker. She said: “I had his New Jersey posters on my door when I was in the seventh or eighth grade. It made me nervous because the last thing I would want is to ruin a Bon Jovi song.”

This is the first song written by a Rock Band to hit #1 on the Country charts the weeks of May 6th and 13th 2006.

“Who Say’s You Can’t Go Home” reached # 9 on the end of the year Billboard top country singles of the year for 2006.

LYRICS: Written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora
I spent 20 years trying to get out of this place
I was looking for something I couldn’t replace
I was running away from the only thing I’ve ever known
Like a blind dog without a bone
I was a gypsy lost in the twilight zone
I hijacked a rainbow and crashed into a pot of gold
I been there, done thatand I ain’t lookin’ back on the seeds I’ve sown,
Saving dimes, spending too much time on the telephone
Who says you can’t go home

Who says you can’t go home
There’s only one place they call me one of their own
Just a hometown boy, born a rolling stone, who says you can’t go home
Who says you can’t go back, been all around the world and as a matter of fact
There’s only one place left I want to go, who says you can’t go home
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright, its alright

I went as far as I could, I tried to find a new face
There isn’t one of these lines that I would erase
I lived a million miles of memories on that road
With every step I take I know that I’m not alone
You take the home from the boy, but not the boy from his home
These are my streets, the only life I’ve ever known,
who says you can’t go home

I been there, done thatand I ain’t looking that
It’s been a long long road
Feels like I never left, that’s how the story goes

It doesn’t matter where you are, it doesn’t matter where you go
If it’s a million miles aways or just a mile up the road
Take it in, take it with you when you go,
who says you can’t go home

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright, its alright
Who says you can’t go home [x2]
