July 7.2015 – Story Behind The Song “Daddy’s Hands” by Holly Dunn

praying hands

As I mentioned over at the Warm and Fuzzy today, today would have been Papa Jaymes birthday. I am missing him big time today, so I appreciate your indulgence in playing some music that makes my heart happy as I think of him. The song was released in August of 1986, well ahead of Dad’s diagnosis of cancer or Holly Dunn’s father’s death.
I am grateful that she was inspired to write this song, a tribute to her own Dad, that we all could latch our hearts on to as well.
Hands are a big deal to me. I look at hands, admire, study and sometimes hold. I held my Dad’s hand as he took his last breath in this world, something I am thankful for and yet hurt desperately for.
We don’t play this song much anymore which makes it extra special that I get the privilege of highlighting it today. I hope it will touch your heart.
This one’s for you Daddy!~Love,Robynn

Holly Dunn wrote this touching memoir of her loving relationship with her father, a San Antonio Texas minister.
It was released in 1986 as the second single from the album Holly Dunn.

Holly says this about “Daddy’s Hands:

” That little song. Man. It’s been such a gift. It was a gift to me the way it fell into my head. That little song was amazing. It was my fourth single. Each single did a little better and a little better, but I hadn’t even broken the Top 40 yet. I was barely known. My name was barely out there with the DJs and the public. We had barely scratched the surface when we put out “Daddy’s Hands.” It blew the lid off of everything. It was instantaneously accepted. It didn’t go number one, oddly enough. It went number seven. It was on the charts for over six months which back there was unheard of. I got two Grammy nominations because of that song and had eleven award nominations because of that little song. It was gangbusters for me. I won the Horizon Award at the CMA Awards and I won the New Female Vocalist Award at the ACM’s. All of a sudden, it exploded. Then I felt like I was trying to hold on for dear life!”

LYRICS: Written by Holly Dunn
I remember Daddy´s hands, folded silently in prayer.
And reaching out to hold me, when I had a nightmare.
You could read quite a story, in the callouses and lines.
Years of work and worry had left their mark behind.
I remember Daddy´s hands, how they held my Mama tight,
And patted my back, for something done right.
There are things that I´ve forgotten, that I loved about the man,
But I´ll always remember the love in Daddy´s hands.

Daddy’s hands were soft and kind when I was cryin´.
Daddy´s hands, were hard as steel when I´d done wrong.
Daddy´s hands, weren´t always gentle
But I´ve come to understand.
There was always love in Daddy´s hands.

I remember Daddy´s hands, working ’til they bled.
Sacrificed unselfishly, just to keep us all fed.
If I could do things over, I´d live my life again.
And never take for granted the love in Daddy´s hands.

Daddy’s hands were soft and kind when I was cryin´.
Daddy´s hands, were hard as steel when I´d done wrong.
Daddy´s hands, weren´t always gentle
But I´ve come to understand.
There was always love in Daddy´s hands.

Daddy’s hands were soft and kind when I was cryin´.
Daddy´s hands, were hard as steel when I´d done wrong.
Daddy´s hands, weren´t always gentle
But I´ve come to understand.
There was always love …..
In Daddy´s hands.

  1. Robin,
I really enjoyed your story. I wanted to let you know that myself and Susie McEntire (Reba’s sister) released our version of Daddy’s Hands today on iTunes and thought it would go well with your story. I hope you enjoy.

We just love this song and plan to sing it in our church for fathers day.I as a child was always impressed with my daddys hands. They were so strong and worked hard to support all us kids and my mother.

I just found your article and I cannot thank you enough for posting this. Ever since this song came out back in 1986 it has epitomized my own Dad to me. Born August 16, 1943, my dad was born during WWI and was the first born son of an Army Air Corps pilot. His own father taught him to be a mechanic and he later joined the US Navy as an engineer. He later passed on many of those mechanics skills to me being his eldest child, but I am a female, so it was very unusual. On August 23, 2016 at 6:36pm EST, my father passed away at the age of only 73 years. What I will miss most about his being gone is the closeness we shared and his forever being constantly supportive of everything I have ever want to do in my life.
