Deric Ruttan, Connie Harrington and Jessi Alexander penned “Mine Would Be You” : “This is an incredibly well written and sexy song with a sad twist at the end. It’s just such a cool song, one of the best songs that I’ve ever had a chance to record. It’s just one of those songs that somebody plays at the Bluebird and the room stops and everybody has chills.”

Writing songs from a male point of view was a relatively new exercise for Jessi Alexander. So for the writing session that would eventually produce this song they brought in Deric Ruttan, who works with Harrington at her THiS Music publishing company. “Connie always has a wealth of great ideas,” Alexander explained. “I remember her just saying, ‘mine would be you,’ and Deric and I just looked at each other and said, ‘whoa whoa whoa.'”

After that promising start the trio “plowed through” a series of images and ideas. “‘Mine would be you,’ OK. Well, my favorite ‘blank.’ We would just go back and forth. My favorite sundae, my favorite game, my favorite drink, whatever … mine would be you,” Alexander said. “It got deeper and deeper, pretty much as a positive love song in a gritty way, that first day.”

For their next session a fortnight later, the threesome met at Alexander’s house. “And that,” Alexander said, “is when the song took the twist to that negative last verse. I think having that perspective, getting away from the song, then coming back that evening, and having some wine, we started to go there. And it felt so right, to kind of complete the story.”

For the week of November 4, 2013 it became Shelton’s 10th consecutive number one single when it reached No. 1 on the Country Radio chart, tying Brad Paisley for the longest consecutive streak of number one singles. As of January 2014, the single has sold 823,000 copies in the United States

Lyrics:
What’s your all time high, your good as it gets?
Your hands down best ever make-up sex?
What’s your guilty pleasure, your old gold tooth?
Well if you ask me, mine would be you

What’s your worst hangover, your best night yet?
Your 90 proof, your Marlboro Red?
The best damn thing you lucked into
That’s easy girl, mine would be you

Mine would be you
Sun keeps shining, back road flying
Singing like crazy fools
Making up our own words
Laughing ’til it hurts
Baby, if I had to choose
My best day ever
My finest hour, my wildest dream come true
Mine would be you

What’s your double dare, your go all in?
The craziest thing you ever did?
Plain as your name in this tattoo
Look on my arm, mine would be you

Mine would be you
Sun keeps shining, back road flying
Singing like crazy fools
Making up our own words
Laughing ’til it hurts
Baby, if I had to choose
My best day ever
My finest hour, my wildest dream come true
Mine would be you

What’s the greatest chapter in your book?
Are there pages where it hurts to look?
What’s the one regret you can’t work through?
You got it baby, mine would be you
Yeah you got it baby, mine would be you

Mine would be you
Taillights fading
Daylight breaking
Standing there like a fool
When I should’ve been running
Yellin’ out something
To make you wanna hold onto
The best love ever
Girl, can you tell me
The one thing you’d rather die than lose?
‘Cause mine would be you
Mine would be you
