stone cold sober

Today’s Story Behind the Song is about Brantley Gilbert’s “Stone Cold Sober”, It was released in August 2015 as the fourth single from his third studio album Just as I Am. It was only included in the Platinum Edition of the album.

Brantley Gilbert penned this song with Brett James and Dan Layus. The two songwriters were picking away at it, and Gilbert helped the pair complete the track after recalling a time in the mid-2000s when he called his friend Amber Cochran up after having a few drinks. “Usually when it came to her, I wouldn’t do that,” he told Taste of Country. “I wouldn’t talk to her unless I was straight as an arrow.”

In 2014 Gilbert announced his engagement to Amber Cochran. “I think everybody has drunk-dialed at one point in their life,” he shared, “but looking back it’s kind of crazy when you look back at the drunk dial that happened that night and you’re telling somebody how much you love him and it actually ends up being true.”

The song has sold 112,000 copies in the US as of February 2016.[5]

The Shane Drake directed video shows Gilbert cleaning up after what looks to have been a wild party as well as flashbacks to the night before. “I knew Shane could get that on film,” Gilbert said. “He’s done a lot of my videos, so I know he’s great. But when you look at the stuff he’s done for artists like Avril Lavigne and Timbaland … you see he understands those moments when the good times wash out and you’re cleaning up the mess.”

“In a lot of ways, that’s what the song is about, too: in the mess figuring out what you said, realizing it’s right and repeating it stone cold sober,” he added. “It’s pretty strong stuff.”

Lyrics:
I guess I said some thing’s last night
That’s usually in the morning light
I regret it
Like double shots and cigarettes
Said things like
“I love you baby” and
“I know I sound crazy, but let’s just work this out ya and maybe settle down”

I woke up hungover
But still had to call you
‘Cause I just realized girl
That maybe it was all true, yeah

I let the whiskey talk
And baby it said too much
I got the feeling now
It didn’t say enough
‘Cause I’m waking up alone
Missing that midnight kiss
I can’t promise you forever
All I know is I still want you to come over
And I’m stone cold sober

Well I can lie about 99 percent of the time
When I’ve had too much to drink
Yeah I do stupid things

But this time is different
And baby it feels so right
I hope you were listening
To every word I said last night

I let the whiskey talk
And baby it said too much
I got the feeling now
It didn’t say enough
‘Cause I’m waking up alone
Missing that midnight kiss
I can’t promise you forever
All I know is I still want you to come over
And I’m stone cold sober

Yeah I got blood shot eyes (Got blood shot eyes)
But it’s all crystal clear (All crystal clear)
No I don’t need Jim Beam
To know I need you here

Yeah I let the whiskey talk
And baby it said too much
And I got the feeling now
It didn’t say enough
‘Cause I’m waking up alone
Missing that midnight kiss
I can’t promise you forever
All I know is I still want you to come over
Baby all I know is I still need you to come over
And I’m stone cold sober

Yeah baby I’m stone cold sober

Come on over
