The body of Courtney Cash, the late Johnny Cash’s neice, was discovered Wednesday morning in what authorities have described as a 4-foot-by-2-foot deep box near the door of her Putnam County home, about 80 miles east of Nashville. Courtney is the great niece of Johnny Cash.

Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews said Cash was stabbed to death during a struggle at the home during the early morning hours Wednesday.

“It’s our understanding that at about 3 or 4 a.m. yesterday morning the three had been out together somewhere. They came home, a struggle ensued, and that’s when the stabbings occurred,” Andrews said.

Her boyfriend, William Austin Johnson, was injured but managed to escape the house and drive himself to a hospital.
Wayne Masciarella is in custody for the crime, charged with first degree murder, and additional charges are pending.

The Cash Family releases a statement saying:
“We ask for your prayers for the Cash family at this time. Courtney and her boyfriend are beloved members of my family and like you we have a lot of questions and emotions that we are beginning to sort through today. We ask for you to respect our privacy and appreciate all the support that the public and media has always offered my family, as we handle the loss of my grand-daughter, pray for the father of my great-grand child and journey through the search for justice on this violent act. We are completely heartbroken. It is a time like this that we are grateful for our faith and trusting the loving guidance of God.”
