I just wanted to remind you about a fun event that is happening at Valley View Mall on Saturday, October 15th. It’s the annual Positively Pink Parade & Party!
Registration is at 10 a.m. and is $5 and that money goes to the Every Woman’s Life program, which provides free mammograms to uninsured and underinsured women in the Roanoke Valley. http://www.carilionclinic.org/Carilion/Every+Womans+Life+Program
With your $5 paid registration you get a Power of Pink ring, a pink ribbon bagel from Panera Bread (a HUGE sponsor of this event!) a chance to win a Pandora bracelet from Fink’s Jewelers (must be present to win) and the first 200 will receive a $20 Valley View Mall/CBL gift card!
Get your most outlandish, outrageous pink outfit together and join us in a mardi gras style parade with family and friends as we raise awareness by remembering those touched by breast cancer and celebrating the many survivors. The parade starts at 11 a.m. and the party will be on -going just outside of Panera Bread.
Panera Bread has been such an awesome advocate for breast cancer awareness and have sponsored this event with passion! Carilion Clinic, Fox 21/27 and Valley View Mall have joined forces to sponsor this fun event.
All over the nation these parades are taking place and they are making a difference in their communities. We would love for Roanoke to lead the way and show the nation not only how much we support our breast cancer survivors, but how we celebrate their lives in style!
Wont you join the party? I hope to see you there!

Dad – July 7.1928 – August 31.1994
17 years ago today my Dad passed away after courageously battling cancer. He had beaten it in to remission twice before it took his life. The day he died was the worst day of my life.
It is very personal and I have been forthcoming about my loss even back to when he was first diagnosed. The first time I cried on the radio was when I came back from his funeral and I turned that microphone on for the first time after my life had changed. Amazingly, people like you understood and reached out to me in big and small ways. I learned a lot about human kindness during those difficult days.
My dad wasn’t a celebrity, politician or an important executive. He was a hard working man and he was my dad.
I know that many people can relate to this loss and understand completely when I say that not a day goes by that I don’t still miss him.
I’ve mentioned before that he once told me he didn’t want me sitting around a grave crying while he was pushing up daisies! So, to make me smile and I think it makes him smile too, I put a pin-wheel at his grave whenever I get up to Cincinnati.
I hope this doesn’t seem morbid but that in fact you can see in my vulnerability a celebration of a life and my way of remembering a precious life. We all need to celebrate those we love a little more, don’t you agree?

I Felt The Earth Move… – August 24.2011
Everyone is talking about yesterday’s earthquake. Did you feel it? Where were you when you felt it? Did you know what it was?
As for me, I was sick yesterday and was hanging out on my couch when the “event” happened. I’ve felt one other earthquake in my life ( I will talk about that further down in this note).
My first clue that something was about to happen was when Lucy the cat that lives with me started freaking out. I mean her hair and tail went straight up and she was in fright and flight mode!
I live kind of near the Roanoke airport so when I heard the roar next and then the shaking began, my first thought was that a plane had gone down. I literally felt it sweep across the living room floor and by the time it reached the kitchen and the glasses started rattling I realized what was going on. And still I sat on the couch! Talk about an earthquake plan? Yeah, I froze. Then I texted Jay Webb at WDBJ 7 and asked the obvious, “was that an earthquake?!”
It certainly made my “sick day” highlight tape!
So, back to the other earthquake – I was grew up in Cincinnati,Ohio and in the summer of 1974 there was an earthquake. In those days my brother Steve and I use to rough-house a lot. So when the quake happened my parents just thought that Steve and I were rockin’ the house! But when I walked out of my bedroom and he came running down from upstairs, the parents had that “ohhh” moment!
I had been napping, a Sunday afternoon ritual, and my bed shook! I remember waking up and having no clue what was happening. I turned the radio on shortly after all the chaos and Cincinnati DJ Mark Sebastian said, ” I don’t know why everyone is talking about this earthquake thing..I”m not going to talk about it..” and he started playing the Carole King song “I Feel The Earth Move Under My Feet”!
Three decades ago and I still remember that day. And I wont soon forget yesterday’s Roanoke quake either. These are the stories that make up our life!
